ACE / CER Formula

ACE/CER is a formula.

Like math — there's a right structure. Follow it every time and you get the points. It's not about being smart. It's about being organized.

A — Answer the question directly. C — Cite specific evidence. E — Explain the connection.

Three parts, in order. Every time. The teacher can't give you credit for an answer she can't find — ACE makes your answer impossible to miss.

Breaking it down

A — Answer directly

One sentence. Don't explain yet.

✓ "Colonialism harmed Africa because…"
✗ "There are many reasons why…"
C — Cite specific evidence

A fact, statistic, or event. Be specific.

✓ "At the Berlin Conference in 1884…"
✗ "There is evidence that shows…"
E — Explain the connection

Always start with "This shows that…" or "This demonstrates that…"

The trick: A and E say the same thing

But E goes deeper using your evidence:

A: Colonialism still impacts Africa today. C: At the Berlin Conference, Europeans drew borders ignoring ethnic groups. E: This shows that today's ethnic conflicts are a direct result of colonial decisions — outside forces created Africa's instability.

E connects C back to A. Your E should make the teacher think "she actually gets it."
